At the time of writing this article, coffee maker pods - and the cute little machines that use them - seem to be all the craze. For busy people, the single-serve convenience of fresh, custom-brewed coffee straight into your cup is hard to resist. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you're out to buy a pod style machine.

Tips for Buying Pod Coffee Makers
Advantages:
- Correct Brew – the machine is preset to brew the right amount of coffee at the perfect temperature, for the correct amount of time. Your cup will never be over- or under- extracted, never weak or bitter.
- Various Flavors – pods are available in various flavors, allowing you to brew single-serves of separate flavors with a minimum of fuss.
- Quick – you don't need to worry about measuring and grinding. Just push a button.
Disadvantages:
- Pre-ground – the most obvious disadvantage of using pods and pod machines is that the coffee is pre-ground. You will never get the same flavor and aroma that you get from freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee from a pre-ground coffee pod.
- On-going Expense – by volume, coffee maker pods are significantly more expensive than fresh beans.
- Limited Range – unlike when you buy fresh beans, you are limited by the flavors available in pod form.
Optional extras to look for:
- Pod Compatibility – check that your unit will accept a variety of pods so that you are not limited to those provided by the manufacturer.
- Some makers will brew tea as well as coffee – look for tea pods.
- A built in water reservoir (check the capacity) will save you refilling the unit for each cup – just be sure to keep the water fresh.
- Hot water dispenser – can be used for hot chocolate or other beverages.
- Some units come with a pulse-brew button that simulates steeping action for tea brewing.
- Decent cup clearance – be sure your favorite cup (travel mug) will fit beneath the spout.
- Easy cleaning – make sure the unit has removable parts that are dishwasher safe.
- Standby
- Auto shut off
