Explained simply, cold brewed coffee is a coffee extract (or syrup) brewed using fresh ground coffee and cold water. The syrup can be used to make awesome iced-coffees... or added to hot water for a wonderfully smooth tasting hot drink.

Once you taste cold brewed coffee for yourself, you'll no doubt notice that cold brew is significantly less acidic - in both taste and nature. And you may or may not notice that it also has a bit less caffeine.

Whilst coffee fiends like myself might prefer a regular brew, we also need to consider the health benefits of cold brew. I personally like to replace one or two cups a day with cold brew - simply because I feel better drinking the lower acidity, lower caffeine coffee over my usual plunger brew.

If you find that your regular coffee makes you short-tempered, insomniac and forgetful, you might find that cold-brewed coffee brings you relief. Other common effects of heavy coffee drinking are heartburn, insomnia and blood sugar level fall. Over 54 million Americans who suffer from cardiac problems may actually be a victim of beverage side-effect, says National Heartburn Alliance.

How it Works

The common cold brewer is a basic, low-tech gadget... a plastic pitcher with a fabric filter, posted above a carafe that catches the final syrup. It works using gravity and a simple filter... so you definitely save on electricity.

Brewing Guide

How to make your own cold brewed coffee:

  • Take a pound of ground coffee beans and pour fresh, filtered water over the top. Most guides suggest 10 to 12 hours brewing time for a mixture of nine cups of cold water and a pound of ground coffee beans.
  • Let it stand/brew for about 12 hours... or overnight.
  • Filter and/or sieve the liquid coffee extract using a fine filter to remove all residue of coffee grounds.
  • The extract is now ready to be stored in fridge for at least two weeks. The syrup will go bad if left too long, and flavor will begin to diminish after about a week. I suggest you make just enough for one week.
  • To prepare your drink, pour out a little syrup and add warm-hot water. I usually use about 1/4 syrup and 3/4 water.
  • Note: You may not actually need a purpose-built cold brew coffee maker such as the Toddy Coffee System, but they are certainly a wonderful convenience! Otherwise you can make it in your favorite jug and simply use a paper coffee filter - although this can be a little messier than Toddy Coffee.

Enjoy Your Cold-Brew - Tips

Reasons you should opt for cold brewed coffee -

  • The percentage of acid is less in cold brews, advisable for people with heartburn.
  • Lower caffeine helps you lower your caffeine intake (cold brew is a great option for late-evening coffee drinkers).
  • The taste being less acidic is quite different from normal brews. People used to hot brews of intense coffee may find cold brewed a little dull, although people who drink the paper filtered coffees will probably find cold brew refreshingly smooth and tasty.
  • The Dark roasts work better than milder flavored beans.
  • You can always microwave the extract to make a very hot cup.
