If you have an espresso machine at home, or a stove-top espresso pot (Moka pot), you can easily create any cup of café-style coffee at home. The basic single-shot of espresso forms the basis of favourites such as lattes, cappuccinos and macchiatos.
If you are feeling creative, here are a few coffee recipes to try throughout the day.
Morning Coffee
Caffe Latte – one part espresso to four parts milk. Simultaneously pour hot milk and espresso into a thick, heat-proof serving glass.
Cappuccino – one-third espresso (one shot), one-third hot milk and one-third milk froth. Cappuccino should never be so milky that you cannot taste the coffee; the coffee flavour must come through. Dust with chocolate if you like, though a true coffee-buff would frown at you!
Afternoon Coffee
Espresso Macchiato – one shot of espresso, served in a small glass and stained (which is what macchiato means) with a dash of hot milk froth. Traditional macchiato is near-black coffee. Many of today's cafés have altered the recipe to suit modern tastes, serving it as a white coffee almost like a Latte. If it's a true macchiato you're after, make it at home, or find a traditional Italian café.
Evening Coffee
Short Black – a simple 'short black' (single shot of espresso), is a luscious way to compliment any sweet dessert. Add sugar if you like, but remember that in the espresso birth place of Italy, milky coffee after lunch is a real a no-no!
Non-Espresso Coffee
Although the styles of coffee commonly served in cafés (long black, flat white, cappuccino, macchiato, latte, etc.) are espresso-based, there are other styles that can be made from non-espresso coffee. If you don't have the equipment to make espresso at home, try some of these non-espresso ideas:
Café créme – regular, non-espresso coffee served with cream.
Café Melange – two parts non-espresso coffee to one part hot milk, served with a dollop of whipped cream.
Iced Coffee – ice cubes placed in a tall glass before being filled with equal portions of cold coffee and milk. Vanilla essence, cream and sugar are added to taste.
