In the United States today about half the population is suffering from stomach and gastrointestinal issues. More simply put complications from acid like acid reflux disease, GERD, heartburn and indigestion. For many this has meant changes in their diet and additions of over the counter and prescription drugs. To add insult to injury, most of the time, coffee is the first acid producing culprit to be axed from the diet and for coffee lovers; this is a shame. Not only are they suffering the burning, nausea and pain that comes with these sensitivities to acid they have also had to give up their morning brew. This is because traditionally brewed coffees are extremely high in acid and caffeine both, which will aggravate the problems mentioned above.
Recently, it has become known that there may be some alternatives for coffee lovers suffering from acid disorders and here we will look at two possible answers; low acid coffee and cold brew technologies.
Low Acid Coffee
The first area you will find relief in is low acid coffee. A company called Puroast was looking for a better way to roast the coffee bean to produce a full-bodied flavor. The idea was to produce coffee similar in taste to the varieties found in Venezuela, a natural smooth tasting blend. After a bit of experimentation they discovered a process that would do just that. It would not be long before consumers were reporting that they could now drink coffee in spite of their acid reflux or heartburn. This had not been the original intent however the company followed up on these claims by hiring researchers to look into the matter.
The results of surveys showed that 90% of people had no ill effects from acid after drinking their coffee. This led to the production of low acid coffees in various flavors and roasts. Subsequent taste tests from reputable reporters like Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal all concluded that this low acid coffee was number one.
The only downside to low acid coffee is perhaps the price. Starting at around ten dollars for twelve ounces the price is a bit higher than a commercial alternative. However, it is cost comparable to most specialty coffees, plus no heartburn.
Cold Brew
Did you know that you could cold brew coffee? About forty years ago, a Cornell graduate found a love for coffee extracts while traveling abroad. He studied the process and came home to create his own version. Cold brew coffee was introduced to the United States. Like the example above, the first design was not targeted at producing low acid coffee. The concept was to provide a smooth full-bodied coffee, which they did. As a side benefit, however they soon found that this process rendered a low acid coffee. The tests showed that cold brewed coffee contains 50-60% less acid than traditional brews, and about 25% less caffeine. Not bad side effects if you ask me. The only downside to cold brew coffee is the time, it takes about twelve hours for the coffee grounds to steep and produce the extract.
