Semi automatic espresso machines allow the user to stop and start the brewing process using a push button. This gives the user a good level of control over the extraction process and the final cup. Combined with their affordability, this makes them the most common home espresso machine.
A grinder is not included in the machine. This can be considered an advantage because it allows the user to choose a higher quality grinder that can be used and maintained separately.
Buying considerations:
- USE - Semi automatic espresso machines automate the pump extraction process, eliminating the physical effort that was required to use the piston style machines. The rest of the process, including adding the pre-ground beans, adding the water, stopping and starting the pump (at the push of a button) and cleaning the portafilter is manual.
- WATER RESERVOIR - the size of the water reservoir will depend on the machine. Given that you will be emptying the portafilter after each brew anyway, adding extra water should not be a problem. Check the capacity if you are catering for more than a small group. Also, make sure the reservoir is removable for easy cleaning, and can be filled whilst in use to allow for continuous supply of water and steam.
- MILK FROTHERS / STEAM WANDS - these machines come with steam wands for cappuccino making.
- MAINTENANCE - look for easy to clean exterior and automatic safety shutoff on the boiler to prevent damage if there is a malfunction.
Other optional features:
- cup warmer
- hot water dispenser - good for making Americanos
- pod compatibility - good if you prefer the ease of preground coffee pods
- digital display
