In general, steam espresso machines are not recommended for the seeker of true espresso. The use of stream to force the water through the coffee means that the coffee is often scalded by the excess heat, and also under-extracted due to the low pressure (as compared to pump extraction).
However, these machines are smaller and significantly cheaper. If you intend to drink coffee only occasionally and are not looking to spend too much, then although the drink won't match your local cafe, it certainly won't be unpleasant. In fact, these machines provide the perfect opportunity to sample flavored coffees.
