If you are prepared to spend the extra money, a super automatic espresso machine automates the entire coffee making process to make a wonderful cup of coffee every time. From grinding fresh beans, to tamping the grounds into the filter and brewing the espresso to your customized presets, these machines take all the guesswork out of the perfect espresso.

Buying considerations:

1. USE - super automatic espresso machines automate the entire coffee making process. You only effort will be occasionally refilling the water reservoir and emptying the waste unit.
2. WATER RESERVOIR - the size of the water reservoir will depend on the machine. Check the capacity if you are catering for more than a small group. Super automatics generally allow the water reservoir to be filled whilst in use to allow for continuous supply of water and steam.
3. MILK FROTHERS / STEAM WANDS - these machines come with steam wands for cappuccino making.
4. MAINTENANCE - look for easy to clean exterior and automatic safety shutoff on the boiler to prevent damage if there is a malfunction.

Other optional features:

1. cup warmer
2. pre-grinding - grinds beans in advance, ready for the next coffee . Good if you are using the machine all day (for example, office use). Not so good if the next drink won't be made for a while.
3. hot water dispenser - good for making Americanos
4. programmable (button) or adjustable (knob) settings for:
   1. water level per cup
   2. fineness of grind
   3. coffee dose
   4. water temperature
5. multiple preset buttons - for example, two buttons will allow you to assign one for a short-pour and the other for a long-pour
6. pod compatibility - good if you prefer the ease of preground coffee pods
7. bypass doser - allows you to use preground coffee instead of the beans in the hopper. Good if you need to make the occasional decaf or flavored coffee.
8. digital display (as opposed to indicator lights which can be confusing)
9. water filter - available on the more expensive models, apart from better tasting coffee, these have the added benefit of keeping the machine in good condition
