Wait a minute! Cold brewed coffee? Who ever heard of such a thing?
Believe it or not... there is a little known coffee system that allows you to brew coffee with no electricity and cold water. The result is a robust coffee concentrate that can be stored up to three weeks and has a number of benefits over its hot brewed cousin.
I have personally made my own cold-brewed-coffee before creating articles for this website and I love it! I was so surprised that I actually like it. For me personally, it makes a lovely long black. Don't get me wrong... I still love my espresso and plunger coffee, but I usually add milk and sugar. Because cold brewed coffee is much less bitter, I'm able to drink it with no milk and no sugar. It's very refreshing and I highly recommend it... especially if you like your coffee in all shapes and forms like I do!
There are a few purpose built cold brew coffee makers, but here I'll introduce you to the most famous brand - the Toddy Coffee System.
This system has been around for nearly forty years. It was developed by Todd Simpson a Cornell engineering graduate. After trying a cup of coffee made from cold concentrate, he set about creating a better way to brew his own concentrate at home. The result was Toddy Coffee System.
The Toddy Coffee System is a simple set up really, a glass carafe, plastic brewing container, rubber stopper and filter. That is all there is to the components, as you can see it requires no electricity or power of any kind. All that is required now is a pound of your favorite coffee and a little patience.
Toddy Coffee System Brewing Guide
- The first step is to insert the stopper into the bottom of the plastic brewing container.
- Next, place the filter in the bottom of brewing chamber
- Add a pound of coffee to the brewing container
- Add water; do not stir the mixture, as this will clog the filter. Instead, tap lightly on the container to insure all the grounds are soaking in water.
- Leave over night or about 12 hours.
- Now remove the stopper from the bottom of the brewing container and let the coffee concentrate flow, in thirty minutes or so the process will complete.
Once your Toddy Coffee System has completed you are now ready to fix a cup of coffee or store the brew for later use. The concentrate will stay fresh in the refrigerator for 14 days; it will keep an additional week but may show signs of getting stale. To increase storage time you can freeze the concentrate and it will keep up to six months.
Advantages
When the Toddy Coffee System was developed, it was simply for a better cup of coffee. However, there were some unexpected side effects; the coffee has an amazing 50 - 60% less acidity! This is because the cold brew method prevents over-extraction (often caused by water that is too hot). That means some of the more acidic coffee oils never make it to your cup! In addition, this coffee contains about a third less caffeine than traditional coffee. All this is in addition to the great flavor and flexibility of the product.
Disadvantages
The biggest disadvantage I see is that the on demand coffee drinker will need a bit more discipline to use this system as the primary coffee maker. You need to make your coffee concentrate well in advance. The time you have to wait for the brew (over 12 hours) will be an adjustment for people used to hitting the on button and having coffee a few minutes later. However, this is far from an insurmountable problem and with a little practice, the Toddy Coffee System will work for any home. In fact, once you have your concentrate ready-brewed, the process of making your coffee is actually a whole lot faster... just pour in the syrup and add hot water. Easy!
Buying Tip
This is a great invention on many levels. I would recommend the Toddy Coffee System for many reasons.
- 50-60% reduction in acidity, this means heartburn sufferers can come back to the brew they love.
- 1/3rd less caffeine. Hey this is a bonus in anyone's book... retain robust flavor, but lose some caffeine - what could be better?
- Rich robust flavor and the flexibility to have hot or cold coffee from the same pot
- No electricity required, every little bit helps the environment.
Once the coffee has migrated to the bottom chamber, gently remove the upper chamber and grounds. Pour into pre-warmed coffee cups. Enjoy!
