An entertaining brew…

The vacuum pot gives you entertainment as well as great coffee. Placing one of these on the dinner table will surely liven up flagging conversation.

The entertainment comes from the visible brewing process involving a round-trip by the coffee liquid between the two glass chambers. Starting in the bottom chamber, water makes its way up into the top chamber where it brews with coffee grounds before descending into the bottom chamber as freshly brewed coffee. The grounds are filtered out and remain in the top chamber. All the while a lot of coffee noise and bubbling goes on.

Brewing Guide

1. Prep

Make sure all your equipment is cleaned to remove any rancid coffee oils from a previous brew, and rinsed to remove any detergent residue.

2. Grind

The fineness of grind you choose will depend on the type of filter in your vacuum pot. You will come across a variety of filters, including mesh, nylon and cloth. Mesh requires a courser grind than nylon and cloth. You will know if your grind is too fine by the sediment in the coffee and possible clogging of the filter.

A high quality grinder will help you achieve your goal. Our article on coffee grinders covers all you need to know.

3. Assemble

Pour cold water into the bottom chamber and place the filter into the funnel of the top chamber. Carefully twist the upper chamber (also called a bowl, or funnel) into the bottom chamber. Put your ground coffee into the upper chamber.

Vacuum coffee makers will only produce good result when used to full capacity. Do not try to halve the brew by using less water and coffee - your results will be less than satisfactory.

4. Boil - water goes up!

Place the pot onto your stove and wait for the water in the bottom chamber to boil. It will rise up the funnel into the top chamber. It is normal for there to be some water remaining in the bottom chamber when the water has finished rising - this helps to protect the bottom jug from the heat.

IMPORTANT: Vacuum coffee makers have been known to overheat and crack. Be careful to never let the bottom chamber boil completely dry. This will result in overheating, causing the glass to crack, spilling scalding hot coffee.

5. Cool - coffee comes down!

Once the water has finished rising, remove the pot from the heat. Swirl the pot to aid extraction of the coffee. Now wait as the liquid cools for the coffee to return to the bottom chamber.

6. Serve

Once the coffee has migrated to the bottom chamber, gently remove the upper chamber and grounds. Pour into pre-warmed coffee cups. Enjoy!

When buying Vacuum Coffee Makers …

Points to consider:

1. When buying vacuum coffee makers, you have two options - manual or automatic (electric). The manual will give you more control over the brewing process, allowing you to control the contact time and when the pot is removed from the heat. With the automatic makers, you lose this control, but safety is improved as you are less likely to overheat the pot.

2. You should buy the correct size pot for the number of cups you will serve. Vacuum coffee makers will only produce good result when used to full capacity.
